Conversazione 1: Telefonare all’ENEL

 

Don Smith:

Pronto! ENEL? Potreste venire ad aprire il contatore della luce?

Segretaria:

Certamente. Mi dia nome, cognome e indirizzo

Don Smith:

Don Smith, via Camilla 8. Quando potreste venire?

Segretaria:

Martedì prossimo all'una e mezza, va bene?

Don Smith:

No, martedì non sarò a casa. Potreste venire invece giovedì?

Segretaria:

Sarà a casa giovedì all'una e mezza?

Don Smith:

Si, perfetto.

Segretaria:

Intesi. Allora, a giovedì.

 


 

Translation:

Don Smith:

Hello! ENEL? Could you come to turn on the electric meter?

Secretary:

Certainly. Give me [your] name, surname, and address

Don Smith:

Don Smith, 8 Camilla Street. When could you come?

Secretary:

Next Tuesday at 1:30, OK?

Don Smith:

No, I won't be home Tuesday. Could you come Thursday instead?

Secretary:

Will you be home Thursday at 1:30?

Don Smith:

Yes, perfect.

Secretary:

All right. Thursday then.


 

Conversazione 2:  Chiamare un elettricista

 

Elettricista:

Pronto! Elettricità Fulmine.

Don Smith:

Buon giorno. Avrei bisogno di un elettricista per certi lavori. Abbiamo preso un appartamento nuovo.

Elettricista:

Allora ha bisogno di prese nuove, e di un controllo al vecchio impianto.

Don Smith:

Si. Potrebbe mandare qualcuno per vedere quello che serve e per farci un preventivo?

Elettricista:

Va bene questa sera, verso le sette? Vengo io dopo il lavoro.

Don Smith:

Va bene. L'aspetto alle sette. Abitiamo in via Camilla, numero 8, quarto piano. Don Smith.

Elettricista:

Bene, e grazie.

 

 

Translation:

Electrician:

Hello! Electricity Lighting.

Don Smith:

Good day. I need an electrician for some work. We have just rented a new apartment.

Electrician:

Then you need new outlets and an inspection of the old wiring system.

Don Smith:

Yes. Could you send somebody to see what we need and to make an estimate?

Electrician:

Is it all right this evening around seven? I'll come after work

Don Smith:

Fine. I'll expect you at seven. We live at 8 Camilla Street, fourth floor. Don Smith.

Electrician:

Fine, and thanks.



Notes on the conversations

1. In Italy, the electric company, Ente Nazionale Elettricità, is abbreviated ENEL.

2. Il contatore della luce, "electric meter."

3. You can pay radio, "radio," televisore, "television," gas, "gas," and luce, "light," bills at the bank and at the post office.

4. The gas and electric utilities are two separate companies Italy.

5. Dealings with Italian utility companies such as the ENEL and SIP (Telephone Company) are normally taken care of by the HRO (Housing Referral Office). As far as turning on meters and installing telephones, you have to go in person to the contract office of each company.
