Theme 1: Shopping

At the end of this theme, you should be able to perform following tasks in Italian:
Lesson 1
1. Understand sentences such as "I'll be right with you," "It's your turn," and "What can I do for you?"
2. Buy food in packages, bags, cans, boxes, and so on, using the expression "I need....
3. Understand and use the expressions "How much?" and "How many?"
4. Ask the grocer for certain foods, using European measures such as kilos, grams, and liters
Lesson 2
5. Buy bread, rolls, croissants, and assorted pastries at the bakery/pastry shop.
6. Understand expressions such as "Something else?" "Will that be all?"
7. Understand and use the expressions for "these" and "those."
Lesson 3
8. Buy meat by the kilo at the butcher shop.
9. Tell the butcher that you want your meat cut in
thick or thin slices.
Lesson 4
10. Buy fruit and vegetables at the fruit and vegetable shop.
11. Understand and use expressions such as "not too ripe," "the change," and "home delivery."
12. Use the forms of occorrere ("to want," "to need").
Lesson 5
13. Buy fish and shellfish at the
fish market.
14. Ask the vendor at the fish market if the sole is fresh.
Lesson 6
15. Use adjectives denoting color and shade (light and dark)
16. Buy clothing for men at a department or men's store.
17. Understand the sales clerk when he asks you what size you wear.
18. Answer questions about your size.
Lesson 7
19. Answer the sales clerk's offer of assistance with "No. I am just looking." Or, describe what you're looking for (item, size, and color) and how it fits.
Lesson 8
20. Tell the sales clerk at the shoe store that you'd like to see the pair of shoes displayed at a certain price in the window.
21. Tell the sales clerk which shoes you want while pointing to them in the window. Use the expression, "Next to ...."
22. Understand and answer the salesperson's question "What size shoe do you wear?"
23. Tell the sales clerk that the shoes you just tried on are "A little large/tight," or, "The 42 fits me fine," and "I'll take them."
24. Understand the question "Do you want anything else?" and answer, "No, that's all for today."
Lesson 9
25. Tell the salesperson at a department or men's store what you bought and that it does not fit.
26. Understand the expression "Something else?"
27. Ask the sales clerk if he can give you a refund, exchange an article of clothing, or give you credit.
28. Understand the expression, "I'm sorry, sir. Our merchandise is not refundable."
29. Understand when the salesperson says, "I can give you credit if you wish," and asks for your sales slip.
Lesson 10
30. Ask the salesperson to show you certain items.
31. Ask for something less expensive or nicer.
32. Ask for prices and understand when the salesclerk tells you the prices are fixed.
33. Say to the salesperson that you like an item and that you'll take it.
Lesson 11
34. Use the preposition a ("at the house of " "at") in O ' sentences such as "Come to my house" and "I'm not home."
35. Say that you'd like to have something done or repaired
36. Ask and answer the question, "What's your name?"
37. Ask someone to spell his/her name.
38. Spell your name, and the name of the street and town in which you live.
Lesson 12
39. Tell the clerk at the camera shop that you would like to have some rolls of film developed.
40. Understand the salesclerk when he asks you to write your name and address on the envelopes.
41. Ask the clerk for film (different sizes, color, black and white, 12/20/36 exposures, and super 8).
Lesson 13
42. Ask the prices of various items and bargain with the vendor at a flea market.
43. Ask and answer the question, “How much did you pay for (a given item)?"
